  2. I remember like it was yesterday.... the anxiety I felt when I found out my daughter, Lexxy, had become the victim of bullying. I couldn't sleep for days, felt more like weeks and maybe it was. I recall how terrified my daughter was to go to school the next day. I remember role-playing with her to build courage and how hard it was for her to speak up. The tremors in her voice when she spoke about the little boy who wouldn't stop kicking her in the back during reading sessions then years later a little girl who would glare her down daily and ask her what she was looking at on the hour. I remember feeling an overwhelming urge to confront the parents. Instead I reported the incident to my daughter's teacher. Eventually things calmed down. Going forward I made it my business to teach my kid the importance of speaking up for herself and I reiterated how much she's loved and how important she is to me and her family, and the world in general. I went so far as to teach my kid a few self-defense moves - how to fight off her back... how to use her long legs to her advantage... choke hold etc. No easy task. My kid's timid, very girlie. One teacher described Lexxy as a "nervous child". I'm happy to announce that Lexxy's confidence has grown immensely over past couple of years. These days I put a "goal" chart up on the wall. Each time Lexxy speaks up for herself at school, I put a star on the chart. When a certain amount of stars have been accumulated, I reward my daughter with a special treat.
