Understanding God's Help for Abandonment and Rejection
If you’ve been abandoned, you know the deep emotional pain which comes from someone leaving you when they should have been there for you. Abandonment communicates, “You aren’t worth connecting with.” The truth is you absolutely are worth connecting with. You are precious and a masterpiece to God – after all He made you! He loves you very deeply, and he provided His Word (the Bible) to help you through all things in life, and this includes being abandoned.
Here are scriptures to help you with abandonment:
God is a father to those who have no father or whose father is not around.
Psalm 68:5 - A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.
Psalm 27:10 - Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.
Being abandoned can leave you feeling as if you can’t trust anyone to be there for you. God says he will never leave you. You can feel secure with God. He is always with you.
Deuteronomy 31:8 - The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
Joshua 1:9 - This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
The emotional pain of abandonment can create feelings of insecurity and trauma. God can give you the security and love you crave.
Psalm 18:19 – His love broke open the way, and he brought me into a beautiful, broad place. He rescued me – because His delight is in me!
Psalm 91:4 – His massive arms are wrapped around you, protecting you. You can run under his covering of majesty and hide.
2 Samuel 22:33 – It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.
Nothing can stop God from loving you.
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 8:39 - No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The effects of abandonment can manifest in different ways, such as depression, addiction, self-esteem issues, and anxiety. The Lord God says when you fix your thoughts on Him, He will give you peace. He is the antidote to anxiety.
Isaiah 26:3 – You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Psalm 119:165 - Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your instruction; nothing can make them stumble.
Abandonment can leave us feeling as if we can’t ever have a good life. God sent his son Jesus so that everyone could have an abundant and full life. You are complete and whole as you accept Jesus into your life.
Colossians 2:10 - You have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
John 10:10 - The thief’s [Satan’s] purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My [Jesus] purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
God heals the deep wounds of abandonment.
1 Peter 2:24 - He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.
Learning to forgive (even though they don’t deserve it) is a key to healing. God forgives us, and wants us to forgive those who have hurt us.
Colossians 3:13 - Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
